Standing tall among the fish ponds and wetlands of the New Territories, Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda is Hong Kong’s oldest surviving pagoda, a graceful six-storey brick-and-granite structure dating back to the Ming dynasty. It’s a serene, off-the-beaten-path gem that rewards visitors with a glimpse of rural Hong Kong’s layered history and peaceful landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pagoda Itself – Climb the narrow spiral staircase to the top (if open) for panoramic views of the surrounding fish ponds, marshes and distant hills. The pagoda’s traditional feng shui design was built to protect the local village and bring good fortune.
- Ping Shan Heritage Trail – The pagoda is part of this excellent walking trail that weaves through centuries-old villages, ancestral halls and temples. Don’t miss the Tang Ancestral Hall and Sheung Cheung Wai walled village.
- Fish Pond Landscapes – The area around the pagoda is a mosaic of active fish farms. Look out for egrets and kingfishers – it’s a surprising birdwatching spot right near the bustling city.
- Local Village Life – Wander through the nearby villages of Ping Shan and Hang Mei Tsuen to see traditional Hakka houses and rural lanes that feel a world away from central Hong Kong.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside about 1–2 hours to properly explore the pagoda and its immediate surroundings. For the full Ping Shan Heritage Trail (which includes the pagoda), budget a relaxed half-day – start in the morning to avoid the heat, bring water and a hat, and stop for a snack at one of the small local eateries near the MTR station.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ping Shan Heritage Trail – The pagoda is the trail’s northern anchor; combine it with the other heritage sites along the route.
- Hong Kong Wetland Park – A 15-minute drive away, this excellent eco-park has boardwalks, hides and a visitor centre showcasing the region’s wetland ecology.
- Yuen Long Town – Just a few minutes by taxi or bus, Yuen Long offers lively markets, traditional dim sum houses and a glimpse of local New Territories life.
- Tin Shui Wai – A short bus ride south, this new town has the Hong Kong Wetland Park and the Kingswood Ginza shopping mall.
