Perched on a rocky spur above the Mediterranean, Tourrettes-sur-Loup is one of the most beguiling hilltop villages in the French Riviera. Its name comes from the wolves that once roamed the surrounding forests, but today the village is known for its winding cobbled lanes, violet-scented air, and a thriving community of artists and artisans. With medieval stone houses draped in bougainvillea and sweeping valley views, it feels like a secret hideaway far removed from the coastal crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Old Town ramble – Get lost in the labyrinth of narrow, vaulted passageways and stairways that wind through the medieval core; every corner reveals a fountain, a carved doorway, or a glimpse of the distant sea.
- Violet-themed shops – Tourrettes is the capital of the violet, and you’ll find everything from violet liqueur and candied flowers to soaps and perfumes in the boutiques along Rue du Docteur Bouché.
- Artists’ studios – The village has attracted painters, sculptors, and potters for decades; many open their ateliers to visitors, especially during summer evenings when the streets become a gallery.
- Église Saint-Grégoire – This 12th-century Romanesque church features a beautiful baroque altarpiece and a peaceful square with plane trees.
- Le Château – The ruins of the 11th-century castle offer panoramic views over the Loup valley and, on clear days, all the way to the Mediterranean.
- Violet Festival – If you visit in March, don’t miss the Fête de la Violette, a colourful celebration with parades, flower displays, and violet-themed treats.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the old town, browse the shops, and enjoy a leisurely lunch on a terrace. To fully appreciate the village’s artistic soul and perhaps visit a studio or two, allow a full day. Many travellers combine Tourrettes-sur-Loup with a morning in nearby Saint-Paul-de-Vence and an afternoon here, or vice versa. If you’re staying in the region, a late-afternoon visit lets you catch the golden light over the valley before dinner.
