Tharwa, a tiny historic village on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, feels like a secret hideaway just 35 minutes south of Canberra. Its claim to fame is the oldest surviving timber truss bridge in Australia (1895), a photogenic gateway to the wild Namadgi National Park. This is a place for slow mornings, riverside picnics, and connecting with the region's pioneering past.
Highlights & What to See
- Tharwa Bridge: Walk across this heritage-listed timber bridge and admire the engineering of a bygone era – it's the perfect spot for photos, especially in golden light.
- Namadgi National Park: The village is the southern gateway to this sprawling wilderness of granite tors, alpine meadows, and Aboriginal rock art sites. Pick up a map at the visitor centre and tackle the Yankee Hat walking track.
- Lanyon Homestead: Just a 5-minute drive north, this 1850s estate offers a glimpse into colonial life with its furnished rooms, historic gardens, and sweeping views over the Murrumbidgee.
- Cuppacumbalong Homestead: A working farm and gallery with a café serving seasonal fare – stop for a scone and a wander through the gardens.
- Murrumbidgee River: Launch a kayak, cast a line, or simply dangle your feet from the riverbank. The waterhole near the bridge is a local favourite for a refreshing dip in summer.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tharwa itself can be seen in an hour – enough to photograph the bridge and enjoy a coffee at the general store. But to fully appreciate the area, plan at least half a day. Combine the village with a walk in Namadgi (allow 2–4 hours for a short hike) and a visit to Lanyon Homestead (1–2 hours). If you're a keen bushwalker or mountain biker, you could easily spend a full day exploring the national park trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
