Nestled in a steep canyon about 30 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, Termas de Puritama is a series of eight thermal pools fed by a warm river. Surrounded by lush vegetation and towering rock walls, this oasis offers a serene escape from the desert. The water temperature hovers around 33°C (91°F), making it ideal for a long, relaxing soak while you gaze up at the starkly beautiful canyon rim.
Highlights & What to See
- Thermal Pools: Each pool has a slightly different temperature and depth; wander downstream to find your favourite spot. The uppermost pool is usually the warmest.
- Canyon Scenery: The contrast of the emerald-green water against the orange and brown canyon walls is stunning. Keep an eye out for native birds and the occasional vizcacha.
- Boardwalk Trail: A well-maintained wooden walkway follows the river, connecting the pools and offering viewpoints over the cascades.
- Picnic Areas: Designated spots with shade are perfect for a lunch break; pack a picnic to enjoy between soaks.
- Nearby Archaeological Sites: On the drive in, you’ll pass the pre-Inca fortress of Pukará de Quitor and the ancient village of Tulor, both worth a quick stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three hours at the pools, which is enough time to soak in several of them and enjoy the scenery. To fully unwind, plan for a half-day trip from San Pedro de Atacama, including travel time (about 30 minutes each way). Arrive early in the morning (around 8:30–9:00 am) to beat the crowds and have the pools almost to yourself. Afternoons can be busier, especially in high season (December–February).
