Tenia Islet is a tiny, uninhabited speck of coral sand and limestone rising from the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea, just off the coast of Norfolk Island. This protected nature reserve is a haven for seabirds and offers a raw, windswept beauty that feels a world away from the main island. Accessible only by boat, a visit here is an adventure for those seeking solitude, pristine snorkelling, and a glimpse of untouched Pacific island ecology.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkelling the Coral Gardens: The islet is ringed by shallow, crystal-clear water and vibrant coral formations. In calm conditions, snorkellers can spot angelfish, parrotfish, and the occasional green sea turtle drifting past.
- Seabird Sanctuary: Tenia is an important nesting site for wedge-tailed shearwaters and black noddies. During breeding season (October–March), the air is filled with their calls, and you can watch them wheel overhead.
- Untouched Beachcombing: The tiny beach of powdery white sand is littered with shells, pumice stones, and driftwood. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially in the golden light of late afternoon.
- Panoramic Views of Norfolk Island: From the islet’s low summit, you’ll have an unbroken view back to Norfolk’s rugged coastline, Mount Pitt, and the endless horizon of the Pacific.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day excursion (3–4 hours), including boat transfer time from Norfolk Island. The islet itself is tiny—you can walk its entire perimeter in 20 minutes—so the main draw is snorkelling and simply soaking up the isolation. Morning trips are best for calm seas and optimal visibility; afternoon winds can pick up. Most visitors combine Tenia with a boat tour that also visits nearby Phillip Island or Emily Bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Norfolk Island – The main island is your base, offering historic Kingston, convict ruins, and boutique local produce.
- Phillip Island – A larger, rugged island with dramatic cliffs and a thriving seal colony; often visited on the same boat trip.
- Emily Bay – Norfolk’s most sheltered swimming beach, perfect for a relaxed afternoon after your Tenia adventure.
- Mount Pitt Reserve – A network of walking trails through subtropical rainforest with panoramic views.
