Tarifa, at the southernmost tip of mainland Europe, is where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and Europe gazes across at Africa. This wind-whipped Andalusian town is a mecca for kitesurfers and windsurfers, but its whitewashed old town, medieval castle and laid-back vibe reward anyone who lingers. The constant levante wind shapes everything here, from the tapas bars to the beach scene, yet there are plenty of calm corners to explore.
Highlights & What to See
- Playa de Los Lances – a vast, windswept beach perfect for kitesurfing and long walks; watch the colourful kites dance against the backdrop of Morocco.
- Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno – a 10th-century fortress with sweeping views over the Strait of Gibraltar; its history of sieges and chivalry is palpable.
- Old Town (Casco Antiguo) – maze of narrow cobbled streets with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped balconies, and buzzing tapas bars.
- Punta de Tarifa – the southernmost point of continental Europe, where the two seas clash; on clear days you can see the Rif Mountains of Morocco.
- Whale & Dolphin Watching – boat trips from Tarifa offer some of the best cetacean sightings in Europe; pilot whales, orcas and dolphins are common.
- Isla de las Palomas – a tidal island connected by a causeway, now a nature reserve; walk out at low tide for a unique perspective.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal: one day to explore the old town and castle, another for a whale-watching trip or kitesurfing lesson, and a third to relax on the beaches or day-trip to Tangier (ferries run daily). If you're a wind- or kitesurfer, you might stay a week to make the most of the consistent conditions. Tarifa's compact size means you can see the highlights on foot, but a car helps reach nearby beaches and villages.
