Takaka is the bohemian heart of Golden Bay, a laid-back town where creative spirits, organic cafes, and golden-sand beaches meet the wild limestone landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and explore caves, rivers, and coastal tracks that feel a world away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – Crystal-clear freshwater springs with astonishing visibility, considered one of the clearest in the world. The short walk through native bush is a serene pilgrimage.
- Abel Tasman National Park – Just south of Takaka, this coastal paradise offers golden beaches, turquoise waters, and the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. Kayak, hike, or take a water taxi to secluded coves.
- Farewell Spit – A narrow sand spit stretching into the Tasman Sea, a vital bird sanctuary. Join a guided tour to explore the lighthouse and vast dunes.
- Rawhiti Cave – A dramatic limestone cave with giant stalactites and a massive entrance, requiring a steep but rewarding walk through native forest.
- Golden Bay Art & Craft Trail – Takaka is a hub for local artists; browse galleries and studios showcasing pottery, painting, and jewellery.
- Pupu Springs Walk – A gentle loop through lush forest to the springs, with interpretive signs about the unique ecology and Māori significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to soak up Takaka’s relaxed vibe, explore the springs, and take a day trip into Abel Tasman National Park. If you’re a keen hiker or kayaker, add an extra day for a longer coastal walk or a kayak adventure. The town itself is compact, so a morning is enough to browse the shops and cafes before heading out to nature.
