Stretching along Taiwan's rugged southeast coast, Taidong (Taitung) is a blissful escape from the island's frenetic west coast. This laid-back county is where the Central Mountain Range meets the Pacific, creating a dramatic landscape of emerald rice paddies, hot springs, and wild, undeveloped shoreline. The pace is slow, the air is clean, and the indigenous Austronesian culture – particularly the Amis, Bunun, and Puyuma peoples – is vibrantly alive. Whether you're cycling through the East Rift Valley, surfing world-class waves, or soaking in natural hot springs under the stars, Taidong offers a sensory, soulful experience that feels a world away from Taipei.
Highlights & What to See
- East Rift Valley (Hualien-Taidong Valley) – A stunning 180km corridor flanked by mountains, perfect for cycling or driving past rice terraces, tea plantations, and the dramatic Liyu Lake.
- Zhiben Hot Springs – The most famous hot spring area in eastern Taiwan, with public bathhouses and riverside resorts where you can soak in mineral-rich waters surrounded by lush forest.
- Sanxiantai – A spectacular offshore island connected by a unique eight-arch bridge; explore tidal pools, sea-carved rock formations, and a lighthouse with panoramic views.
- Taidong Forest Park – A sprawling coastal park with lagoons, cycling paths, and birdwatching – rent a bike and spend a few hours exploring its peaceful trails.
- National Museum of Prehistory – Fascinating exhibits on Taiwan's indigenous cultures and archaeological finds, including the famous Beinan site with ancient stone coffins.
- Jialulan Coast – A laid-back stretch of coastline with art installations, a surf-friendly beach, and a weekend market selling local crafts and street food.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Taidong at least three to four days to do it justice. Spend one day exploring the city itself – the museum, forest park, and Tiehua Music Village – then venture into the East Rift Valley for a day of cycling and hot springs. A third day can be dedicated to the coastal highlights south of town, including Sanxiantai and Jialulan. If you're a surfer or hiker, add an extra day for the wilder beaches and mountain trails. The pace is unhurried; don't try to cram too much in.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Green Island (Ludao) – A 50-minute ferry ride away, this volcanic island offers world-class snorkelling, hot springs, and a prison history museum.
- Orchid Island (Lanyu) – An even more remote island, home to the Tao (Yami) people, with traditional underground houses and pristine diving spots.
- Hualien – The gateway to Taroko Gorge, about 2.5 hours north by train or car along the dramatic coastal highway.
- Ruisui Hot Springs – A quieter hot spring area in the northern part of the East Rift Valley, great for a relaxing stop on the way to Hualien.
- Chishang – Famous for its endless rice fields and the scenic Brown Boulevard cycling path; try the bento boxes at the railway station.
