Standley Chasm is a dramatic sandstone gorge on the West MacDonnell Ranges, slicing 80 metres deep through ancient rock. The short, easy walk from the car park leads you into a cool, narrow chasm where the walls glow fiery orange when the sun is directly overhead – a photographer's dream moment. It's a quintessential Red Centre experience, easily accessible from Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- The Chasm Walk: A 1.2 km return trail through spinifex and ghost gums into the towering cleft. Aim to arrive between 11 am and 1 pm for the best light show on the walls.
- Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm) Cultural Experience: Join a guided walk led by local Arrernte custodians to learn about bush tucker, traditional uses of plants, and Dreamtime stories tied to this sacred site.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and the striking red-tailed black cockatoo that frequent the waterhole at the chasm's end.
- Picnic & Café: The on-site café serves excellent coffee, bush-tucker-inspired treats, and light meals – a welcome stop after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours here, including the walk and a coffee break. If you're joining a cultural tour, allow 2.5 hours. The site is a perfect morning or late-afternoon stop on a day trip from Alice Springs – avoid the midday heat in summer (November to March).
