Sierra de Ayllón
Rising dramatically between the provinces of Guadalajara and Segovia, the Sierra de Ayllón is a rugged, little-visited mountain range that rewards hikers and nature lovers with wild landscapes, deep beech and oak forests, and sweeping views over the Castilian plains. It's a world away from the tourist crowds, offering genuine solitude and a chance to explore traditional stone villages that seem frozen in time.
Highlights & What to See
- Hayedo de la Pedrosa – one of Spain's most enchanting beech forests, especially magical in autumn when the leaves turn gold and copper. A gentle trail winds through the mossy trees.
- Pico del Lobo – at 2,274 m, the highest peak in the range. The summit hike is strenuous but offers panoramic views over the Sierra and, on clear days, the distant peaks of the Sistema Central.
- Ruta de las Caras – an open-air sculpture trail near Buendía where artists have carved faces and figures into the sandstone cliffs, blending art with nature.
- Monastery of Bonaval – a beautifully restored Cistercian monastery in Retiendas, set in a peaceful valley. Its cloister and church are highlights.
- Traditional villages – explore stone-built hamlets like Majaelrayo, Campillo de Ranas, and El Espinar, where slate roofs and narrow streets preserve a medieval character.
Suggested Time to Spend
To experience the Sierra de Ayllón properly, plan at least two full days. This allows time for one major hike (like Pico del Lobo or the Hayedo de la Pedrosa loop) and a day spent exploring the villages and cultural sites. If you're short on time, a single day can still cover a morning walk in the beech forest and an afternoon visiting the monastery and a village, but you'll miss the deeper sense of wilderness.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hayedo de Tejera Negra – another stunning beech forest in the nearby Sierra de Pela, less visited but equally beautiful.
- Sigüenza – a historic town with a magnificent cathedral and a hilltop castle, perfect for a half-day stop.
- Natural Park of the Alto Tajo – a vast canyon and river landscape offering rafting, hiking, and dramatic rock formations.
- Buitrago del Lozoya – a medieval walled town with a castle and the Picasso Museum, an easy detour on the way from Madrid.
