Deep in the heart of Piauí state, Sete Cidades National Park is a surreal landscape of towering sandstone monoliths, prehistoric rock paintings, and dramatic geological formations that look like the ruins of an ancient city. This 6,300-hectare park is a paradise for hikers and history buffs alike, with over 30 archaeological sites and a network of trails that wind through seven distinct 'cities' of rock. The vibrant red and orange hues of the cliffs, especially at sunset, create a photographer's dream. The park is also a haven for wildlife, with capuchin monkeys, armadillos, and over 200 bird species.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least a full day to explore the park properly. Arrive early (by 8am) to beat the heat and enjoy the best light for photography. The main circuit takes 3–4 hours at a leisurely pace, with time for side trails and stops at viewpoints. If you're an avid hiker or archaeology enthusiast, consider two days to fully appreciate the rock art and less-visited corners. Overnight stays are available in the nearby town of Brasileira or at pousadas near the park entrance.
