São Sebastião
With its stunning coastline of more than 30 beaches, São Sebastião is a coastal gem on Brazil’s northern São Paulo shore. This historic town combines colonial charm with some of the best beach-hopping in the state, all framed by the lush Serra do Mar mountains. Whether you’re after a lively surf scene, a tranquil cove, or a taste of caiçara culture, São Sebastião delivers.
Highlights & What to See
- Praia de Maresias – The crown jewel of the region, famous for its powerful waves and vibrant nightlife. Surfers and sun-seekers flock here, but even if you don’t ride, the sunset views from the beach bars are unforgettable.
- Praia de Juquehy – A more laid-back stretch with calm, clear waters ideal for families and swimming. The palm-fringed sands and rustic kiosks serve fresh coconut water and grilled fish.
- Historic Centre (Centro Histórico) – Wander the cobbled streets lined with well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century churches and colonial houses. Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is a highlight, with its striking blue-and-white tiles.
- Praia de Barra do Sahy – A wild, less-developed beach where the ocean meets a lagoon – perfect for kayaking or simply escaping the crowds.
- Ilhabela State Park – Though technically an island, it’s a short ferry from São Sebastião. The park offers world-class hiking, waterfalls, and pristine beaches.
Suggested Time to Spend
To properly experience São Sebastião’s beaches and its historic centre, plan at least three to four days. Use the first day to explore the town and relax on a central beach like Praia do Arrastão. Dedicate the second day to the northern beaches (Maresias, Juquehy) and a third to the quieter southern ones (Barra do Sahy). If you have a fourth day, take the ferry to Ilhabela for a day trip. The best time to visit is between December and March for warm weather and lively vibes, but shoulder months offer fewer crowds and lower prices.
