Salobreña is a stunning whitewashed village perched on a rocky hill above the Costa Tropical, with a Moorish castle and sweeping views of the Mediterranean. Its maze of narrow, flower-filled streets leads to a 10th-century castle, and the town is famous for its subtropical fruit—mangoes, avocados, and chirimoyas—grown on the surrounding plains. The relaxed pace, excellent tapas bars, and uncrowded beaches make it a perfect stop on a southern Spain road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Castillo de Salobreña – A beautifully preserved Moorish fortress offering panoramic views of the coast and Sierra Nevada; the gardens inside are a peaceful retreat.
- Old Town (Casco Antiguo) – Lose yourself in the labyrinth of whitewashed alleys, where every corner reveals a splash of bougainvillea and a glimpse of the sea.
- Playa de Salobreña – A long stretch of dark volcanic sand with calm waters, backed by a palm-lined promenade and chiringuitos (beach bars) serving fresh seafood.
- Peñón de Salobreña – The iconic rock that the old town clings to; hike up for sunrise or sunset photos.
- Mercado Municipal – A lively market where you can sample local tropical fruits, cheeses, and olives.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend a full day to experience both the historic hilltop and the beach. Start in the morning exploring the castle and old town before the heat, then head down to the beach for lunch and a swim. If you have a second day, consider a hike in the nearby Sugarcane Trail or a drive into the Alpujarras. Half a day is enough for a quick stop to see the castle and wander the old town.
