Salema is a sleepy fishing village on Portugal's western Algarve coast, where whitewashed houses tumble down to a golden-sand beach and the Atlantic crashes against dramatic cliffs. Unlike the region's glitzy resorts, Salema retains a laid-back, authentic charm that appeals to travellers seeking a quieter slice of coastal life. The village's small scale makes it perfect for a relaxed beach holiday, but its position on the Rota Vicentina walking trail and proximity to the Costa Vicentina natural park also draws hikers and nature lovers. The local seafood restaurants serve up grilled fish straight from the boats, and the village's cobbled lanes invite slow exploration.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Salema is a small village that can be seen in a day, but its beach and relaxed pace encourage a longer stay. Plan for at least two nights to fully unwind: spend the first day lounging on the beach and exploring the fossil cliffs, then dedicate the second to walking a section of the Rota Vicentina or visiting nearby Sagres. If you're using Salema as a base for the Costa Vicentina, three or four nights allow day trips to Cabo de São Vicente and the unspoiled beaches of the natural park.
