Ruby Gap, a remote and rugged gorge in the Northern Territory's East MacDonnell Ranges, offers a true outback adventure. This historic site, once the scene of a short-lived ruby rush in the 1880s, is now a serene and dramatic landscape of red quartzite cliffs, sandy creek beds, and permanent waterholes. It's a place for self-sufficient travellers with a 4WD who want to experience the raw beauty and solitude of the Red Centre away from the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate a full day to drive from Alice Springs (about 2.5 hours on unsealed roads) and explore the gorge, including the walk and time at the waterholes. For a more immersive experience, consider camping overnight at the designated bush campsite near the gap; this allows you to enjoy the magical light of dawn and dusk and to fully appreciate the solitude. If you're short on time, a half-day visit is possible but rushed – aim to arrive by mid-morning at the latest.
