Rio Grande do Norte is a sun-drenched Brazilian state where the continent meets the Atlantic in a dramatic sweep of dunes, cliffs, and coconut-fringed beaches. Its capital, Natal, is the gateway to some of the country's most spectacular coastline, while the interior hides colonial towns and prehistoric wonders. This is the land of the world's largest cashew tree, the legendary Ponta Negra beach, and the vast white-sand dunes of Genipabu. Whether you're kitesurfing, dune-buggying, or simply lounging in a beachside bar, Rio Grande do Norte offers a quintessential slice of northeastern Brazil.
Highlights & What to See
- Ponta Negra – The iconic beach of Natal, dominated by the Morro do Careca dune. The promenade is lined with lively restaurants and bars, perfect for sunset caipirinhas.
- Genipabu – A surreal landscape of towering sand dunes and freshwater lagoons. Take a thrilling dune-buggy ride or try the famous 'esquibunda' (sliding down dunes on a wooden board).
- Pipa Beach – A bohemian paradise with dramatic cliffs, dolphin-watching, and world-class surfing. The village has a vibrant nightlife and excellent seafood.
- Forte dos Reis Magos – A star-shaped 16th-century fortress at the mouth of the Potengi River, offering panoramic views of Natal's coastline.
- Maior Caju do Mundo – The world's largest cashew tree, covering an area of over 8,500 square metres. It's a bizarre and fascinating sight, with a small museum on-site.
- Serra do Japi – A mountain range with excellent hiking trails and crystal-clear natural pools, ideal for a day trip from Natal.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 4–6 days exploring Rio Grande do Norte, splitting time between Natal and the beach towns of Pipa and Genipabu. For a relaxed trip, base yourself in Natal for a couple of days to see the city sights and nearby beaches, then move on to Pipa for 2–3 days of coastal exploration. If you're short on time, you can cover the highlights in a whirlwind 3-day road trip, but you'll miss out on the slow pace of beach life.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- João Pessoa – The laid-back capital of Paraíba state, just a 2-hour drive south, with beautiful beaches and a historic centre.
- Fernando de Noronha – A pristine archipelago with world-class diving and stunning beaches, accessible by flights from Natal.

- Tibau do Sul – The municipality that includes Pipa, with other hidden beaches like Praia do Amor and Praia da Pipa.
- Maracajaú – A fishing village with excellent snorkelling in natural pools, about an hour north of Natal.
