Rio de Janeiro’s downtown, or Centro, is a gritty yet fascinating core where colonial history, modernist architecture, and bustling street life collide. Wander past grand churches, art deco skyscrapers, and mosaic-tiled sidewalks, then dive into lively markets and hidden laneways. This is the heartbeat of the city, offering a raw, authentic glimpse into Rio’s past and present.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate a full day to explore Centro on foot. Start in the morning at Candelária, then wander south along Avenida Rio Branco, popping into the Theatro Municipal and Confeitaria Colombo. After lunch, visit the Real Gabinete and the Escadaria Selarón. If you have energy, end at the Museu do Amanhã before sunset. Two days allow you to also explore Lapa’s nightlife and the nearby Santa Teresa neighbourhood.
