Richmond Range National Park is a rugged wilderness of subtropical rainforest, rocky gorges and cascading waterfalls in northern New South Wales. This lesser-known park offers a true off-the-beaten-path experience for hikers and nature lovers, with ancient trees, diverse birdlife and a sense of isolation that feels worlds away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Pinnacle Lookout – A short but steep walk rewards you with panoramic views over the forested ridges and the distant Pacific Ocean.
- Big Scrub Loop – A 4 km circuit through one of the last remnants of the Big Scrub, a once-vast lowland rainforest, with towering figs and palms.
- Gorge Creek Falls – A series of small but photogenic waterfalls and rockpools, perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk.
- Birdwatching – The park is a haven for regent bowerbirds, paradise riflebirds and wompoo fruit-doves; bring binoculars.
- Nightlife – After dark, spotlight for possums, gliders and the occasional frogmouth along the park's quiet roads.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a half-day to explore the main walks and lookout. If you're a keen hiker or birdwatcher, a full day allows time to tackle the longer Big Scrub Loop and linger at Gorge Creek. The park has no camping facilities, so base yourself in nearby Kyogle or Casino for an overnight stay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
