Stretching over 8 kilometers through a stunning limestone karst landscape, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New7Wonders of Nature. This underground river winds through spectacular caves filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and cathedral-like chambers before emptying into the South China Sea. The journey is a surreal, silent glide through a subterranean world, where you'll see unique rock formations and possibly spot bats, swiftlets, and monitor lizards. It's best visited as part of a longer Palawan itinerary, combining with Puerto Princesa city and nearby islands.
Highlights & What to See
- Underground River Boat Tour: The main attraction – a 45-minute guided paddleboat ride through the cave's main channel, with dramatic lighting highlighting the formations.
- Monkey Trail: A short jungle walk near the cave entrance where you can spot long-tailed macaques and other wildlife.
- Sabang Beach: A relaxed stretch of sand perfect for a post-tour swim or lunch at one of the seaside eateries.
- Mangrove Paddleboat Tour: Explore the lush mangroves along the Sabang River, home to egrets, kingfishers, and crabs.
- Ugong Rock Adventures: A limestone formation offering zip-lining and spelunking with panoramic views of the forest and sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to the Subterranean River experience. From Puerto Princesa, it's a 2-hour drive to Sabang, where you check in for your scheduled boat tour. The entire trip – including travel, the boat ride, a short nature walk, and lunch – typically takes 6–8 hours. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying overnight in Sabang to enjoy the beach and nearby attractions without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Puerto Princesa City: The gateway to the river, with a vibrant food scene (try the local crocodile sisig) and the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center.
- Honda Bay: A cluster of islands (Starfish, Pandan, and Snake Island) perfect for snorkeling and island-hopping day trips.
- El Nido: About 5 hours north, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and world-class island tours.
- Port Barton: A quieter alternative to El Nido, with pristine beaches and easy access to turtle nesting sites.
- Underground River (alternate entrance): The Sabang entrance is the main one, but the river also has a less-visited section accessible from the town of Puerto Princesa via a separate trail.
