Playa Del Ingles is a lively coastal resort on Gran Canaria's southern shore, known for its sprawling golden sand beach and vibrant promenade. While it's a major tourist hub, the area offers a mix of sun-soaked relaxation, water sports, and easy access to the stunning Maspalomas Dunes, making it a convenient base for exploring the island's southern coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Playa del Inglés Beach: A long stretch of golden sand with calm Atlantic waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and people-watching. The eastern end is quieter, while the western side near the dunes is more exposed.
- Maspalomas Dunes: A protected natural reserve of shifting sand dunes that border the beach. Walk the marked trails or join a guided tour to appreciate this unique desert-like landscape, best seen at sunrise or sunset.
- Yumbo Centrum: A sprawling shopping and entertainment complex with boutiques, restaurants, and bars. It's a social hub, especially in the evenings, and hosts a lively market on weekends.
- Paseo Costa Canaria: The scenic coastal promenade that connects Playa del Inglés to Maspalomas. Ideal for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, with ocean views and beachfront cafés along the way.
- Aqualand Maspalomas: A large water park with slides, wave pools, and a dolphin show, great for families and a fun break from the beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–4 days here to soak up the beach and explore the dunes. A half-day is enough for the main beach and promenade, but add another day if you want to take a dune hike or visit Aqualand. The area is compact and walkable, so you can easily combine a morning at the beach with an afternoon exploring the Yumbo Centrum or the dunes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Maspalomas: Just a 15-minute walk along the beach or promenade, offering the iconic lighthouse, a peaceful lagoon, and upscale resorts. The Maspalomas Dunes are shared between both areas.
- San Agustín: A quieter resort 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot along the coast, with a smaller beach and a more relaxed vibe. It's a good option for a calmer beach day.
- Puerto Rico: About 20 minutes by car west, this resort town has a sheltered beach and a marina. It's popular for boat trips and dolphin-watching excursions.
- Mogan: A charming fishing village 30 minutes west, with a pretty harbour, whitewashed buildings, and a lively market on Fridays. It offers a more authentic Canarian feel.
- Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: The island's capital, about 40 minutes north by car, with historic architecture, the Museo Canario, and the long Las Canteras beach. It's worth a day trip for culture and urban energy.
