Spain's first national park, Picos de Europa, is a dramatic limestone massif that rises abruptly from the Cantabrian coast, offering some of Europe's most spectacular mountain scenery. The park's jagged peaks, deep gorges, and verdant valleys are home to bears, wolves, and the iconic Cantabrian chamois. Whether you're hiking the Cares Gorge, riding the Fuente Dé cable car, or simply soaking in the views from a remote village, this is a wilderness that demands your attention.
Highlights & What to See
- Ruta del Cares (Cares Gorge) – A breathtaking 12-km trail carved into the canyon wall, known as the Divine Gorge, with sheer drops and roaring river below.
- Fuente Dé Cable Car – Ascend 800 m in four minutes to a high plateau with panoramic views of the central massif and trails into the alpine zone.
- Lagos de Covadonga – Two stunning glacial lakes (Enol and Ercina) set in a lush valley, with easy walks and the nearby Basilica of Covadonga.
- Potes – A charming medieval town in the Liébana valley, perfect for sampling local cheeses (especially Picos de Europa blue cheese) and starting point for many hikes.
- Naranjo de Bulnes (Picu Urriellu) – The park's most iconic peak, a sheer limestone needle that attracts climbers from around the world.
- Wildlife watching – Keep an eye out for griffon vultures, golden eagles, and if lucky, the Cantabrian brown bear in the quieter corners of the park.
Suggested Time to Spend
To experience the park's highlights, plan at least two to three days. Dedicate one day to the Ruta del Cares (allow 5–6 hours) and another to exploring the Covadonga lakes and cable car. If you're short on time, a single day can give you a taste: take the cable car in the morning and drive the scenic road to the lakes in the afternoon. For serious hikers and nature lovers, a week allows for multi-day treks like the GR-202, with overnight stays in mountain refuges.
