Pichi Richi Pass is a dramatic, rugged gorge on the edge of South Australia's Flinders Ranges, carved by ancient seas and now a gateway to the outback. This narrow, winding road (the old Ghan railway route) cuts through red-rock cliffs and offers a striking contrast to the surrounding arid plains. It's a must-drive for anyone exploring the region, with a palpable sense of history and a landscape that feels both ancient and alive.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can drive the pass in as little as 30 minutes, but to truly appreciate it, allow at least half a day. Combine the drive with a Pichi Richi Railway journey (check the seasonal timetable) and a picnic at Woolshed Flat. If you're a keen photographer or hiker, plan for a full day to explore short walking trails and capture the changing light. The pass is best visited in the cooler months (April–October) to avoid extreme heat.
