Pedra Branca State Park
Pedra Branca State Park is a lush Atlantic Forest refuge on the western edge of Rio de Janeiro, offering a wild escape from the city’s urban buzz. Named after the distinctive white-granite peak that rises from its heart, this park is a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving genuine nature without straying far from Rio. The trails wind through dense jungle, past waterfalls and historic ruins, culminating in panoramic views that stretch from the mountains to the sea. It’s a place where the forest feels primordial, and the only sounds are birdsong and the rustle of leaves.
Highlights & What to See
- Pedra Branca Peak – The park’s namesake and highest point (1,025 m). The challenging but rewarding hike takes 3–4 hours each way and offers sweeping views of Rio, Guanabara Bay, and the Serra do Mar.
- Pau da Fome Waterfall – A series of cascades and natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip after a hike. The trail is relatively easy and family-friendly.
- Historic Ruins – Scattered throughout the park are remnants of 19th-century coffee and sugarcane plantations, including the ruins of the Imperial Fazenda do Viegas.
- Birdwatching – The park is a prime spot for spotting Atlantic Forest endemics like the red-necked tanager and the elusive solitary tinamou.
- Vargem Grande Trail – A less-trodden route that leads through bamboo groves and past small waterfalls, offering a more solitary experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to properly experience the park. Start early (around 7 am) to tackle the Pedra Branca summit before the heat sets in – the round-trip takes at least 6 hours, so pack plenty of water and snacks. If you’re short on time, a half-day can still cover the Pau da Fome waterfall and a short loop on the lower trails. For serious hikers, an overnight stay at the park’s camping area allows you to explore deeper trails and catch sunrise from the peak.
