A sprawling green lung in the heart of Mendoza, Parque General San Martín is Argentina’s oldest public park, designed by the renowned landscape architect Carlos Thays. This 400-hectare oasis offers a refreshing escape from the city, with rose gardens, a lake, and the iconic Cerro de la Gloria hill crowned by a monumental bronze sculpture honouring General San Martín’s army. It’s a perfect spot for a lazy afternoon picnic, a jog, or simply soaking up the Andean backdrop.
Highlights & What to See
- Cerro de la Gloria – Climb or drive up this hill for sweeping views of Mendoza and the Andes; the monument at the top is a masterpiece of patriotic art.
- Rosedal (Rose Garden) – A fragrant, manicured garden with over 1,000 rose varieties, fountains and pergolas – ideal for a romantic stroll.
- Lago del Parque – The artificial lake where you can rent paddle boats or simply watch the swans glide by; surrounded by walking and cycling paths.
- Greek-style Amphitheatre – Hosts concerts and events; the neoclassical columns make for a striking photo op.
- Museo de Ciencias Naturales y Antropológicas – A small but fascinating museum inside the park, featuring dinosaur fossils and regional archaeology.
Suggested Time to Spend

If you’re cycling, you can cover more ground in 2–3 hours. Add an extra hour for the museum or a leisurely coffee at the lakeside café. Many visitors combine a morning in the park with an afternoon wine tasting in the surrounding Maipú region.
