Hidden in plain sight among the terraced streets of Paddington, this sunken park is one of Sydney’s most unexpected urban oases. Once a working reservoir that supplied water to the city, the site has been transformed into a lush, tranquil garden that retains its industrial bones – arched brick ceilings, rusted iron columns and a dramatic chasm of greenery. It’s a place where heritage meets horticulture, and where locals come to read, picnic or simply stare up at the sky from the bottom of a 19th-century water tank.
Highlights & What to See
- The Sunken Garden: Descend the stairs into the main basin, where manicured lawns, ferns and a reflective pond sit beneath the original brick vaults. The contrast between soft planting and hard industrial architecture is the whole point.
- The Boardwalk: A raised timber walkway hugs the upper rim, offering a bird’s-eye view of the garden below. Great for photos and for watching the garden’s daily life unfold.
- The Eastern Chamber: The more intact of the two reservoir chambers, with soaring brick arches and a glass floor that lets you peer down into the original water channels. It’s atmospheric and quietly awe-inspiring.
- The Café Kiosk: A tiny but excellent coffee spot near the Oxford Street entrance – grab a flat white and a pastry, then find a bench in the dappled shade.
Suggested Time to Spend
An hour is plenty to wander the garden, walk the boardwalk and soak up the vibe. It’s a perfect pause on a Paddington shopping or gallery crawl – combine it with a morning at the nearby markets or a stroll down Five Ways. If you’re a photographer or architecture buff, allow 90 minutes to catch the light shifting through the vaults.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Oxford Street, Paddington: Sydney’s best strip for boutique fashion, homewares and art galleries – the garden sits right off it.
- Paddington Markets: Every Saturday, the grounds of the local church fill with stalls selling vintage clothes, handmade jewellery and artisan food. A 10-minute walk from the gardens.
- Centennial Park: A sprawling green space with cycling paths, horse riding and duck ponds – 20 minutes on foot or a quick bus ride.
- Woollahra: Leafier and quieter than Paddington, with antique shops and French-inspired bistros along Queen Street. A pleasant 15-minute walk south.
- Bondi Beach: A 15-minute bus ride east takes you to the iconic beach and coastal walk – a fine way to end a day of urban exploring.
