Outlying Islands & Ap Lei Chau
South of Hong Kong Island, Ap Lei Chau (Aberdeen Island) and the nearby outlying islands offer a refreshing escape from the city's intensity. Ap Lei Chau is a densely populated residential island linked by bridge, but its waterfront promenades and seafood restaurants give it a relaxed, village-like feel. Just beyond, the larger outlying islands—Lamma, Cheung Chau, and Lantau—are accessible by ferry and reward visitors with hiking trails, sandy beaches, and traditional fishing villages. This is Hong Kong at a slower pace, where you can swap skyscrapers for sea views and temple bells for the clatter of mahjong tiles.
Highlights & What to See
- Ap Lei Chau Waterfront: Stroll the promenade along Aberdeen Harbour, watching sampans and junks bobbing beside modern yachts. Stop for a seafood lunch at one of the floating restaurants or a no-frills dai pai dong.
- Lamma Island: Hike the family-friendly trail from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan, passing beaches, quirky cafés, and the Kamikaze Cave. End with a seafood feast overlooking the bay.
- Cheung Chau: Famous for its bun-snatching festival, this car-free island is ideal for cycling, eating fish balls, and visiting the Pak Tai Temple. Climb to the Mini Great Wall lookout for coastal views.
- Tai O, Lantau: A stilt-house fishing village on the west coast of Lantau, where you can take a boat trip to see pink dolphins (seasonal) and sample salted fish and shrimp paste.
- Po Lin Monastery & Tian Tan Buddha: On Lantau, take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car for sweeping views before visiting the Big Buddha and the monastery's vegetarian lunch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Ap Lei Chau can be explored in half a day, but to appreciate the outlying islands properly, plan at least two to three days. Use a full day each for Lamma and Cheung Chau—hike, eat, and soak up the village vibe. Dedicate a day to Lantau, combining the Ngong Ping area with a visit to Tai O. If you're short on time, a day trip to Lamma is the most rewarding single excursion, with its mix of nature, culture, and seafood.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Victoria Peak: A short trip from Central, the Peak offers panoramic views of the harbour and islands, plus the Peak Circle Walk.
- Macau: A 1-hour ferry from Hong Kong, Macau's Portuguese heritage and casinos make it a popular day trip or overnight destination.
