Ohakune
Nestled at the southern edge of Tongariro National Park, Ohakune is a vibrant alpine town that serves as the gateway to some of New Zealand's most spectacular volcanic landscapes. Known as the 'Carrot Capital' for its rich horticultural history, this former railway settlement has reinvented itself as a year-round adventure hub. In winter, its slopes are dusted with powder, drawing skiers and snowboarders to Turoa, while summer reveals a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and anglers. The town's friendly pubs, cafes, and local art galleries offer a warm welcome after a day on the trails.
Highlights & What to See
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing – One of New Zealand's greatest day hikes, traversing volcanic craters, emerald lakes, and stark lunar landscapes. Start early to avoid crowds and catch the sunrise over Mount Ngauruhoe.
- Turoa Ski Area – Part of the Whakapapa skifield, Turoa boasts the highest vertical drop in Australasia and offers excellent terrain for intermediates and experts. Summer chairlift rides provide panoramic views.
- Ohakune Mountain Road – A scenic drive that winds through native beech forest to the alpine tussock, with lookout points over the town and Ruapehu. Stop at the 'Big Carrot' sculpture for a classic photo op.
- Mountain Bike Park – The Ohakune Old Coach Road and the 42 Traverse are legendary among mountain bikers, offering everything from gentle forest trails to technical descents. Rentals and guided trips are available.
- Bridal Veil Falls – A short walk from the village leads to this 20-metre waterfall, perfect for a refreshing dip in summer. The plunge pool is surrounded by mossy rocks and ferns.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two to three days to fully appreciate Ohakune's outdoor offerings. A long weekend allows for a day on the Tongariro Crossing (book transport in advance), a day mountain biking or hiking the lower slopes, and an afternoon exploring the town's cafes and galleries. In winter, three days give you two full days on the slopes. If you're passing through on a road trip, a single overnight stop is enough to tackle one major activity, like the Crossing or a bike ride, but you'll want to linger longer.
