Hidden in the lush hills of the New Territories, Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls is a serene natural escape that rewards hikers with a series of four stunning cascades. This trail, part of the Tai Mo Shan Country Park, offers a refreshing break from Hong Kong's urban buzz, with cool pools and verdant forest at every turn. It's a favourite for nature lovers and photographers seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Four Cascades: The main draws are the four named waterfalls: Bottom Waterfall, Middle Waterfall, Main Waterfall (the tallest at about 35 m), and Scatter Waterfall. Each has its own character, from the wide, thundering Main to the delicate, multi-tiered Scatter.
- Swimming Holes: Several pools along the trail are perfect for a quick dip – the clearest and deepest is at the base of the Main Waterfall. Arrive early for solitude.
- Jungle-like Hike: The 2–3 hour return trail winds through dense subtropical vegetation, with bamboo groves, mossy boulders, and the constant sound of rushing water. It's moderately steep in parts but well-marked.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for colourful birds, butterflies, and even wild boar prints in the mud. The area is a biodiversity hotspot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (around 3–4 hours) to fully enjoy the hike and some pool time. Start early to beat the heat and crowds, especially on weekends. If you're a keen photographer or want to swim at each cascade, allow up to 5 hours. Combine with a nearby village lunch for a full day out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kam Tin – Famous for its walled villages (e.g., Kat Hing Wai) and a chance to see rural Hong Kong life.
