Nerva is a tiny, off-the-radar settlement on the western edge of the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia. Its claim to fame is being the westernmost town on the Eyre Highway before crossing into Western Australia, making it a classic road-trip pit stop. Surrounded by stark, mesmerising outback scenery, Nerva offers a genuine taste of remote Australian life—think red dirt, endless horizons, and a palpable sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Nullarbor Roadhouse: The main stop for fuel, snacks, and a cold drink. It's a classic outback roadhouse with a quirky charm and a chance to chat with fellow travellers crossing the Nullarbor.
- Eyre Highway: The drive itself is the main event—straight, flat roads cutting through the vast Nullarbor Plain, with occasional glimpses of the Great Australian Bight's cliffs to the south.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the night sky here is phenomenal. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.
- Nearby Lookouts: Short detours to the Bunda Cliffs or the Head of the Bight (seasonally) offer dramatic views of the Southern Ocean and, from June to October, migrating southern right whales.
- Nullarbor National Park: A vast, protected area of limestone karst and desert, accessible via rough tracks. It's a true wilderness experience for those with a 4WD and self-sufficiency.
Suggested Time to Spend
Nerva is a brief stop rather than a destination. Allow 30 minutes to stretch your legs, refuel, and snap a photo of the iconic road sign. If you're driving the Eyre Highway, it's a natural break between Ceduna and Eucla. Most travellers pass through in a day, but if you have time, consider an overnight stay at the roadhouse's simple accommodation to experience the outback sunset and stars.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ceduna: The last major town before the Nullarbor crossing, about 200 km east, with supermarkets, accommodation, and the Ceduna Oyster Farm.
- Eucla: The first settlement across the WA border, known for its historic telegraph station ruins and the Eucla Pass.
- Head of the Bight: A key whale-watching site (June–October) with a boardwalk overlooking the Bunda Cliffs.
- Great Australian Bight Marine Park: Protects the coastal strip and offers spectacular cliff-top views and whale-watching.
- Yalata: An Indigenous community with cultural tours and access to the Head of the Bight.
