Mount Yasur is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, located on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. Its constant, low-level eruptions create a mesmerizing spectacle of glowing lava fountains and ash plumes, drawing adventurous travelers to witness the raw power of the Earth up close. The volcano is a sacred site for the local John Frum cargo cult, adding a layer of cultural intrigue to the natural wonder.

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full day from Port Vila, including a short flight or boat trip to Tanna Island, then a guided 4WD tour to the volcano. The actual crater visit lasts about 1–2 hours, ideally timed for sunset. Many travelers combine this with a night at a local bungalow for an overnight experience.
