Rising dramatically above the orchards and vineyards of the Orange region, Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area is a volcanic peak that offers sweeping panoramas, cool-climate bushwalks, and a sense of being on top of the world. This 1,395-metre-high shield volcano last erupted over 11 million years ago, and today its slopes are cloaked in snow gums, granite outcrops, and wildflowers. It’s a favourite for day-trippers from Orange and a rewarding detour on any Central West road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout: On a clear day, the 360-degree views from the top stretch from the Blue Mountains to the Snowy Mountains. Arrive early for sunrise or late for golden light.
- Federal Falls: A short walk leads to this pretty cascade, especially impressive after rain or in spring when the surrounding bush is lush.
- Mount Canobolas Walking Track: A moderate 6 km return trail from the car park to the summit, passing through snow gum woodlands and rocky outcrops – keep an eye out for wallabies and echidnas.
- Wildflower Displays: In spring, the conservation area bursts into colour with flannel flowers, boronias, and orchids. The summit heath is particularly vibrant.
- Picnic Areas: Several shaded spots near the base of the mountain are perfect for a lunch break, with gas barbecues and tables available.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate half a day to explore the conservation area – enough for the summit walk, a picnic, and a stop at Federal Falls. If you’re keen on photography or birdwatching, allow a full day to linger. The summit walk takes about 2–3 hours return at a steady pace. Combine it with a morning at a nearby winery or a stroll through Orange’s heritage streets for a perfect day out.

- Mullion Creek: A tiny historic village with a charming general store and access to more bushwalking in the Mullion Range State Conservation Area.
