Mount Apo, the Philippines' highest peak at 2,954 metres, is a dormant stratovolcano that draws trekkers and nature lovers to its misty forests, sulphur vents, and crater lake. Located on the island of Mindanao, it's a challenging yet rewarding climb through diverse ecosystems, from lowland rainforest to mossy cloud forest. The mountain is also a sacred site for indigenous Manobo and Bagobo communities, and its slopes are home to the endangered Philippine eagle.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit crater and Lake Venado: The highest point offers panoramic views of Mindanao and the turquoise waters of Lake Venado, a crater lake often shrouded in mist.
- Sulphur vents and volcanic features: Near the summit, hissing fumaroles and colourful sulphur deposits reveal the mountain's volcanic activity.
- Biodiversity and birdwatching: The trail passes through habitats of rare species like the Philippine eagle, Philippine tarsier, and numerous orchids.
- Indigenous culture: Meet Manobo and Bagobo guides and learn about their traditions and the mountain's spiritual significance.
- Trail options: Choose from the more popular Kidapawan trail or the steeper, less crowded Magpet trail for varied experiences.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most treks to the summit and back take 3–5 days, depending on the trail and pace. A typical itinerary includes two days up, a summit day, and two days down. For a more relaxed experience, add an extra day to explore Lake Venado or the surrounding forests. Acclimatisation is key, so avoid rushing.
