Morvan Regional Natural Park
Morvan Regional Natural Park is a lush, rolling landscape of forested hills, crystalline lakes, and sleepy stone villages in the heart of Burgundy. It feels a world away from the busy Côte d'Or wine route — a place for slow travel, hiking, and breathing in the scent of pine and wild thyme.
Highlights & What to See
- Lac des Settons — The park's largest lake, perfect for kayaking, swimming, or a picnic with views of the dam and surrounding woods.
- Vézelay Abbey — A UNESCO-listed Romanesque basilica perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views and a profound sense of history.
- Château de Bazoches — The 12th-century fortress where Marshal Vauban lived, with period furnishings and a beautiful park.
- Hiking the GR13 — Follow the long-distance trail through beech forests, past hidden waterfalls and ancient Celtic megaliths.
- Bibracte & Mont Beuvray — The archaeological site of a Gaulish oppidum, with a museum and walking trails that evoke the era of Vercingetorix.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to explore the park's highlights. Spend day one around Lac des Settons and the eastern valleys, then day two visiting Vézelay and Bibracte. If you have three days, add a hike on the GR13 or a drive through the Morvan's southern forests. The park rewards those who linger — a week allows you to truly settle into its rhythm.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Burgundy Wine Route — The famous vineyards of Chablis, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Beaune are an easy drive west.
- Dijon — The historic capital of Burgundy, with its mustard shops, medieval palaces, and half-timbered streets.
- Autun — A Roman town with a well-preserved amphitheatre and the stunning Cathédrale Saint-Lazare.
- Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura — A wilder, higher-altitude park to the east, great for cross-country skiing and cheese lovers.
- Loire Valley Châteaux — A longer detour south to châteaux like Chambord and Chenonceau, but doable on a two-week itinerary.
