Just 20 minutes from Adelaide's city centre, Morialta Conservation Park is a rugged pocket of the Mount Lofty Ranges where three waterfalls cascade through a steep, bush-clad gorge. It's a favourite for hikers, rock climbers, and anyone craving a quick nature fix without leaving the urban fringe. The park's signature attraction is the seasonal First Falls, which thunders over a 30-metre drop after rain, but the real draw is the network of trails that wind through stringybark forest and over quartzite ridges, offering panoramic views of the Adelaide Plains.
Highlights & What to See
- First Falls – The most accessible of the three waterfalls, reached via a short, sealed path. Best in winter and spring when flow is strongest.
- Morialta Gorge Trail – A 7.5 km loop that takes you past all three waterfalls, with steep sections and rocky scrambles. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Giant's Cave – A massive overhang and cave formed by ancient sea levels, visible from the gorge trail. A great spot for a photo stop.
- Rock climbing – The park's quartzite cliffs are a local climbing hotspot, with over 100 bolted routes suitable for intermediate and advanced climbers.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for koalas, echidnas, and the elusive superb lyrebird, which has been reintroduced here.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to tackle the Gorge Trail and see the main falls, but you could easily spend a full day if you want to explore the longer ridgetop walks or do some climbing. Arrive early on weekends, as the car park fills quickly – by 9am in fine weather. For a shorter visit, the 1.5 km First Falls Walk is perfect for families or those short on time.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Stirling – A charming hills village with antique shops, bakeries, and the Stirling Hotel. Perfect for a post-hike lunch.
- Adelaide Hills wine region – Wineries like Shaw + Smith and Hahndorf Hill are within a 20-minute drive. Combine the park with a cellar-door tasting.
- Adelaide city – Back in town, explore the Central Market or take a stroll along the River Torrens. The park is an easy morning or afternoon escape.
