Rising abruptly from the arid plains of Aragon, Moncayo Natural Park is a dramatic island of green, crowned by the 2,314-metre peak of Moncayo, the highest summit in the Iberian System. This protected area offers a stunning contrast of landscapes, from Mediterranean scrub at the base to Atlantic beech and fir forests higher up, and finally alpine meadows near the summit. It's a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a cool, wild escape from the heat of the surrounding lowlands.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit of Moncayo (San Miguel) – The classic hike to the top is challenging but rewarding, with panoramic views over the Ebro Valley and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. The trail from the Santuario de la Virgen de Moncayo is the most popular route.
- Santuario de la Virgen de Moncayo – A historic mountain sanctuary at 1,620 metres, serving as the main trailhead. The building itself is simple but atmospheric, and the surrounding meadows are perfect for a picnic.
- Sendero de las Pasarelas (The Walkway Trail) – A family-friendly route along wooden walkways that follow the Isuela River, passing small waterfalls and deep pools. Great for a short, scenic stroll.
- Beech and Fir Forests – The park is home to one of the southernmost beech forests in Europe, the Hayedo de Moncayo. In autumn, the colours are spectacular.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for griffon vultures, golden eagles, wild boar, and the elusive Pyrenean desman (a small aquatic mammal).
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to explore the park properly. For the summit hike, start early in the morning (allow 5–6 hours round trip from the sanctuary). If you prefer shorter walks, a half-day is enough to enjoy the Pasarelas trail and visit the sanctuary. Overnight stays are possible in the nearby villages of Ágreda or Tarazona, which also have good accommodation and restaurants.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tarazona – A charming town with a Mudéjar cathedral, a medieval old quarter, and a lively main square. It's the gateway to the park and worth a stop.
- Ágreda – A historic border town with a mix of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim architecture, including a ruined castle and several churches.
- Monastery of Veruela – An impressive Cistercian monastery set in a vineyard landscape, about 30 minutes away. The cloisters are stunning.
- Parque Natural del Alto Tajo – For those with more time, this spectacular canyon park offers river gorges, waterfalls, and excellent hiking, about two hours south.
