Minnamurra Rainforest, part of the Budderoo National Park on the NSW South Coast, is a lush pocket of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest that feels like stepping into a prehistoric world. The centrepiece is a spectacular elevated boardwalk that winds through towering tree ferns, ancient figs, and along the cascading Minnamurra River. It’s an easy, family-friendly day trip from Kiama or a detour on the drive between Sydney and Jervis Bay, offering a cool, green escape with the soundtrack of birdsong and rushing water.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Falls – The main draw: a two-tiered waterfall at the end of the walkway, best after rain when it roars over the escarpment.
- Boardwalk Loop – A 2.6 km elevated walk that takes you through the rainforest canopy, past moss-covered trunks and giant stinging trees (admire from a distance).
- Lyrebirds & Pademelons – Listen for the mimicry of superb lyrebirds; you might spot a red-legged pademelon hopping along the path at dusk.
- Picnic & Barbecue Areas – Well-maintained spots near the visitor centre, perfect for a lunch break surrounded by forest.
- Visitor Centre & Café – Learn about the rainforest ecology and grab a coffee or ice cream before or after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2–3 hours to fully experience the boardwalk loop, take photos at the falls, and enjoy a picnic. If you’re keen on birdwatching or photography, budget an extra hour. The walk is easy and mostly flat, so it suits all ages and fitness levels. It’s best visited in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and wildlife is most active.
