Menindee, a tiny outback settlement on the banks of the Darling River, is the gateway to the Menindee Lakes system and a place where the red dust of the Australian bush meets shimmering inland waters. It’s a land of stark beauty, rich Aboriginal heritage, and frontier history – Burke and Wills passed through here on their ill-fated expedition. For travellers, it’s a peaceful, off-the-beaten-track stop that rewards with birdlife, fishing, and a profound sense of solitude.
Highlights & What to See
- Menindee Lakes: A series of ephemeral lakes – Copi Hollow, Lake Menindee, Lake Cawndilla – that fill with water after rains, attracting thousands of waterbirds. Drive the lakes loop, fish for golden perch, or simply watch the sunset paint the water pink and orange.
- Kinchega National Park: Adjacent to the lakes, this park protects historic shearing sheds, Aboriginal scar trees, and floodplain woodlands. Spot kangaroos, emus, and wedge-tailed eagles; the Woolshed is a photogenic remnant of the pastoral era.
- Burke and Wills Camp: At the site of the explorers’ 1860 camp, a simple plaque and interpretive signs tell the story of their journey. It’s a poignant, windswept spot on the banks of the Darling.
- Maiden’s Hotel: Built in 1851, this is the oldest continuously licensed hotel in western NSW. Pop in for a cold beer and soak up the outback pub atmosphere – the walls are covered in historical photos.
- Menindee Aboriginal Fish Traps: Near the lakes, ancient stone fish traps (Barka) demonstrate the ingenuity of the Barkindji people, the traditional owners. Look for them at low water levels – they’re a tangible link to a 40,000-year-old culture.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself a full day to explore the lakes and Kinchega National Park, plus an overnight stay to catch a sunset and sunrise over the water. If you’re just passing through on the way to Broken Hill, a two-hour stop at Maiden’s Hotel and a quick lake lookout is enough for a taste. For keen birdwatchers or anglers, two nights allow time for a fishing charter or a guided cultural walk.
