Maroubra is a laid-back coastal suburb in Sydney’s eastern beaches, beloved by locals for its powerful surf breaks, sprawling sand dunes, and a community vibe that feels a world away from the tourist crowds of Bondi. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘like thunder’ – a fitting nod to the booming waves that roll into this south-facing beach. Here, you’ll find a classic Sydney beach culture with a raw, untamed edge, plus a thriving café scene and pockets of urban bushland to explore.
Highlights & What to See
- Maroubra Beach – A wide, patrolled beach famous for its consistent surf and the ‘Bommie’, a deep-water wave that breaks on an offshore reef. Even if you don’t surf, the views from the headlands are spectacular.
- Mahon Pool – A tidal ocean pool carved into the rocks at the northern end of the beach. It’s perfect for a safe dip when the surf is up, and the surrounding rock platform is great for sunbaking.
- Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club – One of Australia’s oldest surf clubs, founded in 1906. Grab a coffee from the kiosk and watch the nippers train on the sand.
- Magic Point – A lookout at the southern end of the beach where you can spot little penguins returning to their burrows at dusk (best from June to August).
- Malabar Headland National Park – A coastal walk from Maroubra to Malabar offers stunning clifftop views, wildflowers, and the chance to see sea eagles and whales during migration.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend a full day at Maroubra: start with a morning surf or a swim in Mahon Pool, grab brunch at one of the beachfront cafes, then walk the coastal track to Malabar in the afternoon. If you’re short on time, a couple of hours is enough for a quick dip and a coffee, but the real magic happens when you slow down and soak up the local rhythm.
