Coogee is a classic Sydney beachside suburb that effortlessly blends laid-back coastal charm with a lively social scene. The crescent-shaped beach, flanked by grassy parklands and a historic ocean pool, draws a mix of families, backpackers, and locals who come for the golden sand, reliable surf, and the famous coastal walk to Bondi. With its village-like main street, excellent cafés, and a strong community vibe, Coogee feels less touristy than its northern neighbour, making it a perfect base for soaking up Sydney's beach culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Coogee Beach – The calm, patrolled waters are ideal for swimming and body-surfing, while the grassy reserve behind the sand is perfect for a picnic or a game of cricket.
- Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk – A spectacular 6km clifftop trail with jaw-dropping ocean views, passing through Wylie's Baths, Bronte Beach, and Tamarama. Allow 1–2 hours one way.
- Wylie's Baths – A historic tidal ocean pool built in 1907, offering a serene spot for a dip with a view, plus a café and sunbathing deck.
- McIver's Baths – Australia's last remaining women-only ocean pool, tucked beneath the cliffs – a peaceful, clothing-optional spot for women and children.
- Coogee Pavilion – A buzzy multi-level bar and restaurant at the southern end of the beach, with a rooftop terrace perfect for sunset drinks and woodfired pizzas.
- Grant Reserve – A shady park with a playground, tennis courts, and a popular weekend market (Sundays) selling artisan food, crafts, and vintage goods.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the beach and a leisurely coastal walk to Bondi and back, but stay overnight to experience Coogee's relaxed evening atmosphere – grab fish and chips on the grass or a drink at the Pavilion. If you're doing the full Bondi-to-Coogee walk, start in the morning to avoid the midday heat and allow 2–3 hours including photo stops. Many travellers spend a full day here, combining beach time with a coastal walk and a late lunch at one of the beachfront cafés.
