Malua Bay is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the NSW South Coast, where a crescent of pale sand meets clear, gentle waters. It's the kind of place where the biggest decision of the day is whether to swim, fish off the rocks, or simply sprawl on the sand with a good book. Backed by low-key holiday houses and a smattering of cafes, Malua Bay feels refreshingly undeveloped – a perfect escape from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Malua Bay Beach – a protected, family-friendly beach ideal for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. The northern end has a small rock platform for exploring tidal pools.
- Malua Bay Surf Life Saving Club – grab a coffee or a meal at the club's kiosk, with sweeping ocean views from the deck.
- Mackenzies Beach – a short walk south along the headland reveals this quieter, more rugged stretch, popular with local surfers.
- Bingi Dreaming Track – a 10 km coastal walking trail that passes through Malua Bay, linking Bingi Beach and Congo. Look out for Aboriginal middens and whale-watching platforms.
- Local rock fishing – the headlands at either end of the bay offer safe spots for catching bream and flathead (always check conditions).
Suggested Time to Spend
Malua Bay works perfectly as a half-day stopover on a coastal road trip, or as a base for a relaxed two- or three-day stay. If you're just passing through, allow two hours for a swim and a coffee. For a longer visit, combine the beach with a walk on the Bingi Dreaming Track and a picnic at the southern headland. The town has a handful of holiday rentals and a caravan park, making it an easy overnight option.
