Deep in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile, Malleco National Reserve is a sanctuary of ancient monkey-puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana), misty temperate rainforest, and volcanic peaks. Established in 1907 as Chile’s first protected area, this off-the-beaten-path reserve offers intrepid travellers a raw, uncrowded wilderness experience. Here you can hike through primordial forests, spot rare wildlife, and soak in the raw beauty of the Andes without the tourist throngs.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two full days to properly explore the reserve. Spend the first day hiking the lower trails to Laguna Verde and Salto del Indio, and the second day tackling the Volcán Lonquimay ascent (allow 6–8 hours round trip). If you’re short on time, a one-day visit focused on the Araucaria forests and a short hike is feasible, but you’ll miss the summit views. Overnight at one of the simple refugios or camp amid the trees to fully absorb the silence.
