Deep in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile, Malleco National Reserve is a sanctuary of ancient monkey-puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana), misty temperate rainforest, and volcanic peaks. Established in 1907 as Chile’s first protected area, this off-the-beaten-path reserve offers intrepid travellers a raw, uncrowded wilderness experience. Here you can hike through primordial forests, spot rare wildlife, and soak in the raw beauty of the Andes without the tourist throngs.
Highlights & What to See
- Ancient Araucaria Forests – Marvel at the otherworldly silhouette of monkey-puzzle trees, some over a thousand years old, that dominate the high-altitude landscape.
- Volcán Lonquimay – Tackle the challenging but rewarding ascent of this active stratovolcano (2865 m) for panoramic views over the reserve and beyond.
- Laguna Verde – A pristine emerald lake framed by snow-capped peaks, perfect for a peaceful picnic or a refreshing (if chilly) dip.
- Salto del Indio – A dramatic waterfall cascading through a narrow basalt gorge, accessible via a short hike through dense bamboo and coigüe forest.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep your eyes peeled for the endangered monito del monte, pudú (the world’s smallest deer), and the striking Magellanic woodpecker.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to properly explore the reserve. Spend the first day hiking the lower trails to Laguna Verde and Salto del Indio, and the second day tackling the Volcán Lonquimay ascent (allow 6–8 hours round trip). If you’re short on time, a one-day visit focused on the Araucaria forests and a short hike is feasible, but you’ll miss the summit views. Overnight at one of the simple refugios or camp amid the trees to fully absorb the silence.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Conguillío National Park – Just south, this park offers more Araucaria forests, the stunning Llaima volcano, and the turquoise Laguna Conguillío.
- Tolhuaca National Park – A compact park north of Malleco with hot springs, waterfalls, and excellent birding.
- Malalcahuello-Nalcas – A protected area with volcanic landscapes, lava flows, and the beautiful Laguna Blanca.
- Temuco – The regional capital, a good base for supplies and a taste of Mapuche culture at the Mercado Municipal.
- Carretera Austral – The legendary highway begins just south of the reserve; consider linking Malleco into a longer Patagonian road trip.
