Luberon Hill Villages
Perched atop rocky outcrops, the Luberon hill villages are the quintessence of Provence: honey-coloured stone, narrow winding lanes, and markets bursting with lavender and sun-warmed fruit. This is the land Peter Mayle made famous, yet it remains deeply authentic, where life is measured by the cicadas' drone and the evening game of pétanque. Driving from village to village, you'll discover Romanesque churches, medieval castles, and sweeping vineyards that produce some of the region's finest wines.
Highlights & What to See
- Gordes – A cascading pyramid of stone houses, crowned by a Renaissance castle. Arrive early to beat the crowds and wander its art galleries.
- Roussillon – Famous for its ochre cliffs and trails in the Provencal Colorado; the village glows in shades of burnt sienna and gold.
- Ménerbes – A fortified hilltop village with sweeping views, known for its cork museum and the Maison de la Truffe et du Vin.
- Lacoste – Dominated by the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle, with sculpture gardens and a lively summer arts scene.
- Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque – A sublime 12th-century Cistercian abbey surrounded by lavender fields (best in late June–July).
- L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue – A waterwheel-laced town with one of France's largest antique markets (Sundays).
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least three to four days to explore the Luberon properly. Base yourself in a central village like Gordes or Bonnieux, and spend each day visiting two or three villages at a leisurely pace. Mornings are for market days (Coustellet on Sunday, Apt on Saturday) and cultural sights; afternoons for wine tasting and hiking the GR trails that link the villages. A week allows you to add the hilltop villages of the Vaucluse and the lavender plateau of Valensole.
