Lenakel
Lenakel, the main port and administrative hub of Tanna Island in Vanuatu, is a laid-back gateway to one of the Pacific's most volcanic and culturally rich destinations. This small town hugs the island's west coast, offering stunning sunsets over the Coral Sea and a palpable sense of Melanesian life. While Lenakel itself is modest, it serves as the perfect base for exploring Tanna's raw landscapes and the legendary Mount Yasur, an active volcano that has drawn travellers for centuries. The town's market is a vibrant spot to pick up local produce and handicrafts, and the friendly locals are always keen to share stories about kastom (custom) and island life.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Yasur Volcano – The island's superstar attraction: a continuously active volcano you can hike to the rim of, especially dramatic at sunset when the glowing lava paints the night sky. Guided tours from Lenakel typically include 4WD transfers and a local guide who explains the volcano's spiritual significance.
- Yankwila (Port Resolution) – A scenic bay on the east coast with black-sand beaches, hot springs, and a historic site where Captain Cook landed in 1774. It's also a great spot for snorkelling and observing traditional village life.
- Lenakel Market – Held daily, this bustling market is where locals sell fresh fruit, root vegetables, and handmade crafts. Try the island's famous kava here, prepared in the traditional way.
- John Frum Cargo Cult Villages – Tanna is home to the famous John Frum movement, a unique blend of traditional beliefs and millenarian Christianity. Visit villages like Sulphur Bay to witness their distinct rituals and colourful flags.
- White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa – The island's premier eco-resort, offering a beautiful beachfront, a dive centre, and a restaurant that serves excellent local cuisine. Even if you're not staying, it's worth a visit for a meal or a massage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves in Lenakel for 3–4 days to fully experience Tanna. This allows for the essential Mount Yasur sunset tour (half-day), a day exploring the east coast including Port Resolution and the cargo cult villages, and a day for relaxing or diving. If you're tight on time, a 2-night stay can cover the volcano and a quick market visit, but you'll miss the island's deeper cultural layers. Lenakel itself can be seen in a couple of hours, so use it as a launching pad rather than a destination.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Vila (Efate Island) – Vanuatu's capital, about a 45-minute flight from Tanna, with excellent restaurants, duty-free shopping, and the Mele Cascades waterfall.
- Espiritu Santo – The country's largest island, known for the SS President Coolidge wreck dive, the blue holes, and Champagne Beach. A short flight from Tanna via Port Vila.
- Mystery Island (Aneityum) – A tiny, pristine island south of Tanna, often visited by cruise ships, with stunning white-sand beaches and excellent snorkelling. Accessible by small plane from Lenakel.
- Mount Yasur Volcano (multiple tours) – While a highlight in itself, you can combine a volcano tour with a visit to the nearby Sulphur Bay John Frum village for a full-day cultural and natural experience.
- Whitegrass Beach – Just south of Lenakel, this long stretch of sand is perfect for a quiet afternoon swim or a picnic, with views of the volcanic peak.
