Lake Tekapo, the jewel of the Mackenzie Basin, is a vision of turquoise waters set against a backdrop of rugged Southern Alps. This small alpine village is famed for its surreal, milky-blue lake (coloured by glacial flour), the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, and some of the darkest, clearest skies on Earth. Whether you’re here for stargazing, hiking, or simply soaking in the panorama, Lake Tekapo delivers a serene, otherworldly experience that lingers long after you leave.
Highlights & What to See
- Church of the Good Shepherd – This tiny stone church on the lakeshore is one of New Zealand’s most photographed spots. Visit at sunrise for a crowd-free view with the lake and mountains behind.
- Mount John Observatory – Drive or walk up for 360-degree views of the lake and the Southern Alps. At night, join a stargazing tour to peer through powerful telescopes at the Milky Way – this is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
- Tekapo Springs – Soak in hot pools overlooking the lake, a perfect reward after a day of hiking. In winter, you can even try ice skating.
- Lake Tekapo Walkway – A gentle 5 km trail along the lake’s edge, offering constant photo ops and a chance to spot the wild lupins that bloom in November-December.
- Astro Café – Perched atop Mount John, this tiny café serves excellent coffee and baked goods with the best view in town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one night in Lake Tekapo, which is enough for a sunset visit to the church, a soak at the springs, and a dark-sky experience. If you’re a keen hiker or photographer, add a second day to explore the walkways and the Mount John summit. Lake Tekapo works perfectly as a stopover between Christchurch (3 hours) and Queenstown (3 hours) on the classic South Island road trip.
