Kowloon Peak Walk
Hiking Kowloon Peak is one of Hong Kong’s most exhilarating urban trails, offering a rugged escape into the Sai Kung East Country Park while keeping the soaring skyline of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island in view. This steep, rocky ascent rewards you with a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the jagged ridges of the New Territories to the distant peaks of Lantau. It’s a favourite among local hikers for its dramatic sunrise and sunset views, and a rite of passage for anyone wanting to see the city from its wild side.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit panorama: The 360-degree view from the trig point at 602 m (1,975 ft) is the main event – Kowloon, Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island, and the outlying islands all laid out before you.
- Suicide Cliff: A short scramble off the main path leads to this iconic rocky perch, named for its sheer drop. It’s a dramatic photo spot, especially at sunrise.
- Fei Ngo Shan Road approach: The most common route starts at the end of Fei Ngo Shan Road (a short taxi ride from Choi Hung MTR station) and follows a clear but steep trail up the ridge.
- MacLehose Trail connection: The walk links with Stage 4 of the MacLehose Trail, allowing you to extend your hike into the wilder Sai Kung countryside.
- Sunrise and sunset views: Early birds catch the city lights fading and the sun rising over the islands; late-afternoon hikers watch the skyline glow gold.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow about 2–3 hours round trip from Fei Ngo Shan Road car park to the summit and back. The climb is steep and rocky, with some sections requiring hands-on scrambling. Most hikers start early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and catch the best light. If you plan to linger on the summit for photos or a picnic, add another 30–45 minutes. The trail is manageable for fit walkers, but sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Sai Kung Town: A laid-back fishing town with seafood restaurants and a lively waterfront, perfect for a post-hike meal.
- Clear Water Bay: A scenic peninsula with beaches, hiking trails, and the Clear Water Bay Country Park – great for a half-day coastal walk.
- Kowloon City: Famous for its old-school cha chaan tengs and the historic Kowloon Walled City Park, a cultural contrast to the hike.
- Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve: A serene forested area with easy walking trails and rich birdlife, ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
- Lion Rock Country Park: Another iconic hike with panoramic views; combine both for a full day of ridge walking.
