Kavieng, the laid-back capital of New Ireland Province, is a diver’s paradise and a gateway to some of Papua New Guinea’s most spectacular marine environments. Perched on the northern tip of the island, this sun-drenched town offers a genuine slice of Melanesian life, with turquoise lagoons, World War II wrecks, and vibrant coral reefs right on its doorstep. The pace is slow, the people are warm, and the underwater world is simply world-class.
Highlights & What to See
- Kavieng Harbour & the Wrecks – The harbour is littered with Japanese and Allied wrecks from WWII, including the famous Hakkai Maru and Kure Maru, easily accessible for snorkelers and divers. The clear, calm waters make for incredible wreck exploration.
- Nusa Island – A short boat ride from town, this palm-fringed island offers pristine beaches, excellent snorkelling, and the laid-back Nusa Island Retreat. Spend a day swimming, kayaking, or simply lazing in a hammock.
- Kavieng Market – The bustling local market is a feast for the senses, with piles of tropical fruit, fresh seafood, and colourful bilums (woven bags). It’s the perfect spot to chat with locals and sample betel nut (if you dare).
- Balus (Air Niugini) Wreck – A short walk from town, the wreck of a WWII Japanese aircraft lies half-submerged in the mangroves – a haunting and photogenic relic.
- New Ireland Culture – Visit nearby villages to witness traditional singsings, carvings, and the famous malagan ceremonies (though these require advance arrangement and respect for local customs).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3–5 days in Kavieng, which allows time for a couple of days of diving or snorkelling, a day trip to Nusa Island, and a relaxed exploration of the town and its markets. If you’re a serious diver, consider a week to explore the many reef and wreck sites. The pace here is unhurried – embrace it.
