On a windswept patch of Kangaroo Island, the world’s only purebred Ligurian honeybees produce some of Australia’s most exquisite honey. The Kangaroo Island Honey Farm is a working apiary and visitor centre where you can taste this liquid gold, watch bees at work behind glass, and learn about the island’s unique biosecurity that keeps this ancient bee strain disease-free. It’s a sweet, low-key stop that pairs perfectly with the island’s wild landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Honey Tasting Bar – Sample a dozen different honeys, from creamy leatherwood to punchy eucalyptus, and discover how floral source changes flavour.
- Observation Hive – A glass-walled hive lets you watch the queen bee and her workers in action without getting stung.
- Bee-keeping Museum – Vintage smokers, hives, and tools trace the history of apiculture on the island since 1884.
- Honey Ice Cream – A must-try: soft-serve swirled with their own honey, creamy and not too sweet.
- Gift Shop – Stock up on honey, beeswax candles, and skincare – perfect souvenirs with a story.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes here – enough to taste, browse the museum, and buy a jar or two. If you’re a bee enthusiast or travelling with kids, allow an hour. The farm is a quick stop along the Playford Highway, so it fits neatly into a day of island exploring without eating into time at Flinders Chase National Park or the south coast beaches.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Seal Bay Conservation Park – See a colony of Australian sea lions lounging on the sand, a 20-minute drive south.
- Flinders Chase National Park – The island’s star attraction, with the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, about 45 minutes west.
- Kingscote – The island’s main town, with cafés and the pelican feeding at the jetty, a 25-minute drive east.
- Clifford’s Honey Farm – Another honey producer (different bees, different vibe) worth a quick comparison visit.
- Little Sahara – Sand dunes perfect for sandboarding, 15 minutes south-east of the farm.
