Ilha da Armona
Ilha da Armona is a serene slice of paradise off the coast of Olhão in Portugal’s Ria Formosa Natural Park. Accessible only by ferry, this car-free island offers pristine beaches, unspoiled dunes, and a laid-back vibe perfect for escaping the crowds. With no permanent residents (except in the tiny seasonal village), the island feels like a secret retreat where time slows down.
Highlights & What to See
- Praia da Armona – A vast stretch of golden sand lapped by clear turquoise waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The beach is backed by rolling dunes and a pine forest, providing shade and a sense of wilderness.
- Dune walks and birdwatching – Explore the protected dunes and salt marshes that are part of the Ria Formosa lagoon system. Keep an eye out for flamingos, spoonbills, and other waterbirds.
- The seasonal village – A handful of colourful fishermen’s huts and a couple of casual restaurants serve fresh grilled fish and cold drinks. It’s charmingly rustic and perfect for a relaxed lunch.
- Kayaking or paddleboarding – Rent a kayak from Olhão and explore the calm channels of the lagoon, discovering hidden sandbanks and birdlife.
- Sunset from the western end – The quieter western tip of the island offers spectacular sunset views over the ocean and back towards Olhão’s skyline.
Suggested Time to Spend
A full day is ideal to soak up the island’s tranquillity. Take an early morning ferry from Olhão (the journey takes about 30 minutes), spend the morning swimming and walking the dunes, then enjoy a leisurely seafood lunch. Afternoon kayaking or a siesta on the sand rounds off the day perfectly. If you’re short on time, a half-day from lunch onwards still allows for a blissful afternoon. Note that the island has limited facilities, so bring water and sunscreen.
