Île de Noirmoutier

Île de Noirmoutier, a slender island off the Atlantic coast of France, is a world apart — a patchwork of salt marshes, golden beaches, and ancient forests. Connected to the mainland by a bridge and a tidal causeway (the Passage du Gois), it offers a quintessentially French island escape. Here, you can cycle past wind-sculpted pines, sample the famous salt from centuries-old marais salants, and wander through the medieval streets of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, where a fairy-tale castle rises above the harbour.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Three to four days allows you to explore the island at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day cycling between the salt marshes and the forest, the second day on the beaches and a visit to Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, and the third day crossing to the mainland for a day trip to Pornic or the Vendée coast. If you have only a day, focus on the town, the salt marshes, and a quick dip at Plage des Dames.
