Île de Groix is a ruggedly beautiful island off the southern coast of Brittany, reachable by a 45-minute ferry from Lorient. Known for its dramatic cliffs, secluded sandy coves, and a unique geological formation called the 'Grotte des Korrigans', this island offers a peaceful escape into nature. The main village, Port-Tudy, has a handful of crêperies and a small port where fishing boats bob. With a car-free interior best explored by bike or on foot, Groix feels like a step back in time.
Highlights & What to See
- Grotte des Korrigans: A sea cave with a natural skylight, accessible only at low tide. The path from Port-Tudy takes you along the wild northern coast.
- Plage des Sables Rouges: A stunning red-sand beach framed by heath-covered cliffs. Great for swimming and sunbathing.
- Pointe de la Croix: The island's highest point (literally a hill) offering panoramic views across the bay to Lorient.
- Port-Tudy: The main village with a lively harbour, a small market (Wednesdays in summer), and the Écomusée de l'Île de Groix, which details the island's fishing and maritime history.
- Cycling the island: Rent a bike in Port-Tudy and follow the coastal path (GR 34) – the entire loop is about 25 km and takes half a day, passing lighthouses, dolmens, and hidden beaches.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come on a day trip from Lorient, which is enough to cycle the coast and enjoy a seafood lunch. For a more relaxed pace, stay one or two nights – the island has a handful of guesthouses and campsites. Early risers can watch the sunrise over the bay from the eastern cliffs.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Belle-Île-en-Mer: Larger and more dramatic than Groix, with the Grotte de l'Apothicairerie and the fortified citadel of Le Palais.
